Magic Candies and Unibrow Take Top Honors at New York International Children’s Film Festival 2024

New York, NY – The New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF) has recently announced the winners of its 2024 edition. This year’s jury, consisting of prominent figures in the film industry such as Ira Sachs, Ilana Glazer and Uma Thurman, selected the short films “Magic Candies” and “Unibrow” as the festival’s top picks. “Magic Candies,” an animated short film by Daisuke Nishio, had its world premiere at the festival, while “Unibrow,” a live-action film by Nedda Sharshar, also made its mark. Both films are now eligible for consideration at the Oscars.

Juror Ilana Glazer praised “Unibrow,” describing it as a “universal” story that manages to touch audiences despite its specific subject matter. Fellow juror Benjamin Renner also expressed his admiration for “Magic Candies,” calling it an “absolute delight.”

The audience awards at NYICFF were determined through voting by viewers aged three to 17, as well as adults for the adult-centric categories. The animated film “Kensuke’s Kingdom” took home the Grand Prize for an Animated Feature, while “Coco Farm” won the Grand Prize for a Live-Action Feature. The Grand Prize for Short Film was awarded to “The Queen’s Flowers.”

Jury member Ira Sachs highlighted the unique and intimate cinematic experience that NYICFF provides for young audiences. He emphasized the festival’s inclusivity and its ability to connect with the next generation of film enthusiasts.

In addition to the jury and audience awards, the festival also presented a cash prize called the Unstoppable Kids Prize. This year, the prize went to “Dounia – The Great White North,” a film that showcases the resilience and strength of children in the face of adversity. The winner of the Unstoppable Kids Prize receives $2,500 and an invitation to participate in Shine Global’s Resilience Awards events.

With its selection of diverse and compelling films, the 27th annual NYICFF continues to celebrate the creativity and storytelling power of children’s cinema. The event offers a platform for emerging filmmakers and provides a memorable experience for young viewers.
