Wave of Indictments in Caddo Parish: Grand Jury Charges Five in High-Profile Crimes

SHREVEPORT, LA — The Caddo Parish Grand Jury concluded its latest session with five indictments, highlighting a series of violent crimes including multiple homicides and sexual offenses. This major judicial review finished on July 18, underscoring the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in dealing with serious crimes in the area.

The indictments include four cases of second-degree murders involving different suspects and incidents, alongside bids to tackle related criminal activities. Notably, one individual faces charges in a separate case of violent sexual crimes, reflecting a broader commitment by local authorities to address various forms of violent conduct.

In one prominent case, Shemika Draper Johnson, 40, is charged with the murder of 43-year-old Zachery Johnson, which occurred on April 7. The incident, involving a fatal stabbing on Rose Hollow Lane, has particularly gripped local community members given its brutality.

Another distressing case involves Michael Keith McKnight, 27, who is accused of the double murder of his parents, Roderick and Kathleen McKnight, aged 64 and 62 respectively. This grievous incident took place in their Blanchard home on April 19. McKnight faces two counts of second-degree murder.

Further intensifying the series of indictments is Keelon Bernard Nelson, 44, charged with the murder of David Johnson, also 43, from an incident dating back to April 16. The repetitive nature of these tragic events has raised concerns about the underlying causes of such violence in the region.

Lederrick Dewayne Gant, 37, of Shrevebook, is also under the spotlight, not only for the murder of his mother, 59-year-old Sharon Gant Gosey on April 9, but also for associated weapons charges. Authorities allege Gant used a stolen .40 caliber Smith and Wesson pistol during the commission of the crime, leading to additional charges of illegal carrying and possession of a stolen firearm.

Amidst the murder cases, the grand jury also brought charges of first-degree rape and sexual battery against Petyon Melsha, 30, from Keithville. In light of the sensitive nature of these charges, details remain limited, though Melsha was detained at Caddo Correctional Center since April 10.

These cases underscore a concerning pattern of serious offenses within Caddo Parish, prompting both law enforcement and community leaders to seek stronger measures to prevent future incidents. The local justice system continues to aggressively pursue those accused, ensuring thorough investigations and legal proceedings in each case.

Each indictment reflects the severity with which local authorities are addressing the cycle of violence and the commitment to bringing justice for victims and their families. As these cases progress through the judicial system, the community watches closely, hoping for resolutions that will bring peace and improve safety in their neighborhoods.
