Mike McIntyre Honored with H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award for Lifelong Service and Advocacy in North Carolina

Charlotte, NC — In a celebration of legal excellence, Mike McIntyre, a seasoned advocate and leader, was honored with the H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award during the North Carolina Bar Association’s Annual Meeting on June 21. The award, a tribute to the late Judge H. Brent McKnight, is bestowed upon a lawyer who exemplifies an exceptional blend of professionalism, integrity, and community service, known colloquially as the traits of a “Renaissance Lawyer.”

Esteemed for his extensive career and commitment to public service, McIntyre’s versatile roles span from a distinguished 18-year tenure as a U.S. Representative to his current position at Ward and Smith, where he serves as Senior Advisor for Government Relations and Economic Development. Throughout his political career, McIntyre was a staunch advocate for rural and coastal areas, vigorously supporting military bases and the agricultural sector, as crucial aspects of national development.

His legislative contributions include pushing for recognition of the Lumbee Tribe and spearheading significant laws such as the tobacco buyout, which notably bolstered agricultural communities and military readiness. Beyond legislation, McIntyre has notably advanced initiatives aimed at nurturing future leaders, reflecting his dedication to civic responsibility and empowerment.

One such initiative is the Youth Leadership Challenge, conceived alongside the North Carolina Bar Association, to cultivate civic engagement among middle and high school students. Building on his passion for mentorship, McIntire also launched the McIntyre-Whichard Legal Fellows Program at his alma mater. This mentorship program, initially established at UNC-Chapel Hill, has since expanded to include N.C. Central and Campbell Law Schools.

Residing in the Triangle area near Chapel Hill with his wife, Dee, McIntyre’s investment in community extends well beyond his professional duties. His impact on community and youth, evidenced by his involvement from local church activities to coaching youth sports, underscores his commitment to fostering societal welfare and leadership.

The award was presented to McIntyre by Gill Beck, Chair of the NCBA Professionalism Committee, who lauded McIntyre’s comprehensive and multi-faceted contributions to law, community, and the state of North Carolina. Beck praised McIntyre, highlighting his dynamic involvement ranging from arts fundraising as a Shakespearean actor, to advocacy for environmental preservation and national defense.

In receiving the honor, McIntyre expressed his deep gratitude and reflected on the inspirational legacy of Judge McKnight. “Earning this recognition, named for a judge whose commitment to professionalism and community service stands as an enduring beacon, is profoundly humbling,” McIntyre remarked.

Throughout his career, McIntyre’s exemplary service has been recognized with numerous prestigious accolades, including the Chief Justice I. Beverly Lake, Jr. Award for Distinguished Public Service and the Liberty Bell Award for fostering civic engagement and democracy. Additionally, his strategic contributions have been acknowledged by the U.S. Secretary of the Navy and the International Association of Personnel in Employment Security for his leadership in public policy impacting workforce development.

McIntyre’s multifaceted achievements exemplify the essence of the Renaissance Lawyer Award, affirming his role as a model of service and professionalism within the North Carolina legal community and beyond. His continuing influence is not only a testament to his personal dedication but also serves as a motivating force for current and future legal practitioners aiming to make a difference in their communities and their profession.
