Arundhati Roy Crowned with 2024 PEN Pinter Prize for Her Fierce Literary Voice

London, UK – Acclaimed author Arundhati Roy has been named the 2024 recipient of the prestigious PEN Pinter Prize, an accolade recognizing writers who confront society with the “unflinching, unswerving” gaze that Harold Pinter, the award’s namesake and Nobel laureate, advocated for in his literature. Established by English PEN in 2009, the award celebrates literary figures who demonstrate a relentless pursuit of truth in their work.

The ceremony, slated for October 10 at the British Library, will not only honor Roy but will also feature her delivering a thematic address. Roy, an esteemed novelist and activist, has earned international recognition for her insightful narratives that weave complex social and political underpinnings.

The PEN Pinter Prize annually honors a writer from the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, or the Commonwealth who exemplifies a dedication to the craft of writing and an unwavering commitment to truth, much like Harold Pinter expressed during his Nobel Prize acceptance speech. The prize highlights the unique ability of writers to articulate fundamental human truths and provoke thought concerning societal issues.

This year’s panel, comprising English PEN chair Ruth Borthwick, actor Khalid Abdalla, and writer Roger Robinson, selected Roy for her compelling storytelling and ability to address critical issues with both precision and artistry. Acknowledging her contribution, Borthwick praised Roy for her narrative prowess that elegantly blends urgency and eloquence, addressing themes of injustice while transcending geographical boundaries.

Abdalla commended Roy’s consistent voice of freedom and justice over her nearly three-decade career, emphasizing the resonance of her writings in today’s global landscape—particularly in crisis zones. He noted, “Her profound words and the spirit of her convictions serve as guiding lights through the turbulence the modern world faces.”

Roger Robinson highlighted Roy’s impact, noting her sharp commentary on matters from environmental concerns to human rights abuses, underscoring her role in championing the marginalized and challenging the established norms. “Her steadfast dedication and unique narrative voice render her a deserving honoree,” Robinson remarked.

On accepting the award, Roy herself reflected on the responsibility of writers to address pressing global issues in the absence of voices like Pinter’s. “I wish Harold Pinter were here today to chronicle the baffling shifts we’re seeing in the world. Since he isn’t, it’s up to us to try to fill that void,” she said.

Roy’s selection as this year’s PEN Pinter Prize laureate spotlights not only her individual achievements but also the power of literature to foster societal change. As the world grapples with various challenges, the relevance of a committed, articulate literary voice is ever more apparent. Through her writings and now this recognition, Roy continues to challenge and inspire global thought and action.
