Calcasieu Parish Launches Warming Stations and Shelters to Protect Homeless from Life-Threatening Freezing Temperatures

Lake Charles, Louisiana – As freezing temperatures sweep through the region, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, in collaboration with local agencies, has set up two shelters to provide assistance to the homeless population. These facilities aim to protect individuals from the life-threatening conditions they face while living on the streets.

Starting Monday, January 15, the Water’s Edge Gathering Church located at 2760 Power Centre Parkway in Lake Charles will open its doors at 2 p.m. and operate 24 hours a day until Thursday, January 18 at 8:00 a.m. This shelter will offer not only a warm and safe place to sleep but also three hot meals daily, shower facilities, and laundry services.

The Sulphur Christian Community Coalition Center, situated at 501 E. Burton in Sulphur, was made available for overnight stays starting Sunday, January 14 at 6:00 p.m. It will continue to provide shelter only during the evening hours, closing each morning at 7:00 a.m. and reopening at 6:00 p.m. until the freezing weather subsides. Meals will be served in the morning and evening at this facility.

The Sulphur Christian Community Center will also host lunch for the general public from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., but no beds will be available during this time.

In bringing these warming stations and shelters to fruition, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury has collaborated with various organizations, including The Water’s Edge Church, Sulphur Christian Community Center, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Lake Charles Police Department. By pooling their resources and efforts, they seek to provide a lifeline to those most vulnerable in the face of extreme weather conditions.

It is crucial to ensure that individuals experiencing homelessness are aware of these shelters and have the necessary information to access them. Anyone in need of assistance during this time is encouraged to take advantage of the available resources and find respite from the freezing temperatures. Staying in these shelters will offer not only protection from the cold but also access to vital amenities that can contribute to one’s overall well-being.

As communities come together in times of adversity, it is heartening to witness the collaboration between local agencies and the dedication to supporting the homeless population. These efforts remind us of the importance of compassion and solidarity, especially when faced with weather conditions that pose a significant risk to human lives.
