Columbia, Mo. – A local resident, Deangelo Washington Jr., faces serious allegations of animal abuse following a grand jury indictment issued late Friday. Washington is accused of neglect that led to the death of multiple dogs, as well as other criminal charges related to weapon misconduct.
The indictment details three counts of animal abuse against Washington, who is set to be arraigned at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 7. In a separate legal trouble, Washington has been charged with the misdemeanor unlawful transfer of a weapon, with a hearing for this case scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 27.
Authorities were alerted to the situation at Washington’s property after receiving an anonymous tip, which prompted an investigation. Animal Control officers discovered the deceased animals subsequent to a complaint about the condition of pets in his care. On March 14, 2024, two dead pit mix dogs were found in a deplorable state within one of the units he occupies, showing signs of severe emaciation.
This is not the first instance of trouble for Washington regarding animal mistreatment. Previous allegations suggest a pattern of neglect, with police records indicating that neighbors had reported potential abuse prior to the recent discoveries. During a subsequent search of the premises, four additional deceased dogs were found outside the residence, further indicating prolonged suffering endured by the animals.
The community has been left troubled by the revelations, highlighting ongoing concerns about animal welfare and owner responsibility. Such cases underscore the importance of vigilance and reporting from the public to prevent animal cruelty and ensure accountability for pet owners.
