Cullman Police Chief David Nassetta Set to Retire After 26 Years of Service

CULLMAN, Ala. — After nearly three decades of dedication to law enforcement and community safety, Police Chief David Nassetta is setting his sights on retirement. Nassetta, who has been the head of the Cullman Police Department for 26 years, announced he will retire in October 2024, marking the end of a notable career that began shortly after he graduated from Auburn University in 1997.

Starting his law enforcement journey in Cullman, Nassetta briefly transferred to Birmingham before decisively returning to Cullman, where he ascended the ranks to become chief. Throughout his tenure, Nassetta has witnessed and influenced considerable growth both in the community and within the police department itself.

Reflecting on the evolution of the force, Nassetta shared that under his leadership, substantial efforts were made in recent years to increase staff numbers to better serve the growing city. “In the last two years alone, we’ve added six to seven new positions,” he said. This expansion is a part of a broader initiative to adapt to the increasing demands of a bustling Cullman.

Despite the successes and expansions, Nassetta acknowledges the challenges that have emerged in law enforcement over the years, particularly the changing perceptions of the police role in society. “It’s gotten more difficult,” Nassetta remarked, adding that he would still support his children if they chose to follow in his footsteps, though not without cautioning them about the complexities of the job today.

The veteran chief emphasized the unique position of Cullman, contrasting it with broader national tensions surrounding law enforcement. He stressed that the local community has maintained a supportive and respectful attitude towards its police force, which he believes is not as common in other parts of the country.

As Nassetta prepares for retirement, he expressed profound gratitude towards the community and his colleagues for their unwavering support throughout his career. “From my first day as chief till now, the support has been incredible,” he noted, highlighting the collaborative spirit that has underpinned his long service.

Looking forward, Chief Nassetta is optimistic about the next generation of law enforcement officers. He believes that the solid foundation built during his tenure will aid his successor and the department in continuing to safeguard and serve the Cullman community effectively. His retirement in October next year marks not just the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new chapter for the Cullman Police Department, as it strives to uphold the legacy of dedication and integrity that Nassetta exemplified.
