German-Chinese Lawyer Wanze Zhang Joins Michalski Hüttermann to Expand China Desk and Strengthen IP Practice

COLOGNE, Germany – Wanze Zhang, a German lawyer with Chinese roots, has joined Michalski Hüttermann, a law firm specializing in intellectual property (IP) matters. Zhang brings a wealth of experience in IP law, having previously worked at prominent firms such as Maxton & Langmaack and Dompatent von Kreisler Selting Werner.

During her time at Dompatent, Zhang played a significant role in establishing the China desk, which focused on providing IP advice to Chinese clients. She advised companies like Xiaomi, Great Wall Motor, Opple Lighting, and Svolt Energy on various IP issues, including trademark and patent filing and cancellation proceedings. Zhang also specialized in defending and enforcing IP rights at trade fairs, and frequently acted as a contact person for Chinese companies involved in patent infringement proceedings in Germany.

Joining Michalski Hüttermann, Zhang will work alongside a team of 25 patent attorneys who already maintain close relationships with Asian clients such as Hitachi and Japan Aerospace through their prosecution work. The firm aims to expand its client base by establishing a new China desk, leveraging Zhang’s expertise and connections.

Michalski Hüttermann has also welcomed patent attorney candidate Yan Jie Li and two experienced paralegals, all of whom were involved with the China desk at Dompatent. This addition further strengthens the firm’s capabilities in serving Asian clients and managing IP matters.

With Zhang’s departure, Dompatent’s China desk still retains a team of five patent attorneys, including one qualified patent attorney and two patent attorney candidates who are proficient in Chinese.

The move represents an opportunity for Zhang to pursue new horizons and contribute her extensive IP knowledge to Michalski Hüttermann’s growing practice. The firm’s presence in the field of IP law, combined with its existing Asian client base, makes it an ideal setting for Zhang’s career development.

The appointment of Zhang and her colleagues highlights the strategic importance of the China market in the field of IP law. As global trade expands, protecting intellectual property becomes increasingly crucial, and Michalski Hüttermann aims to position itself at the forefront of providing comprehensive IP solutions to its clients.
