Law enforcement on high alert as rumors of ‘takeovers’ circulate at popular South Bay shopping centers

TORRANCE, Calif. – Law enforcement in the South Bay area is increasing its presence at local shopping centers amid concerns of planned takeovers at two major malls. The Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance and the South Bay Pavilion mall in Carson have reportedly become the target of potential disruptions by youth groups. Police are taking these rumors seriously, as similar occurrences have led to outbreaks of violence in other communities.

Torrance Police Chief Jay Hart addressed the situation, emphasizing the need to inform the community about the planned takeover. Chief Hart expressed his concerns regarding the possible risks and dangers associated with such events. He referenced a recent incident at the Pike in Long Beach, where a shooting took place during a large gathering announced on social media. The police are yet to make any arrests in connection with the shooting.

The announcement of the gathering attracted significant attention on social media, prompting a large police presence at the Pike. This incident has prompted the Long Beach Police Department to adopt a proactive stance by deploying officers and declaring a tactical alert. The situation escalated when officers observed a fight between two individuals, resulting in their arrest.

In addition to the warning from Chief Hart, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement regarding a disruptive youth gathering planned at the South Bay Pavilion. The department, in collaboration with the mall’s security team, has taken preventive measures to ensure the safety of visitors. The statement also emphasized their zero-tolerance policy towards any unruly, unsafe, harmful, or criminal behavior during the event. They called on community members, including guardians and parents, to discuss the potential consequences of such gatherings with their youth.

The Torrance Police Department echoed these concerns and implemented measures to enhance safety and security in and around the Del Amo Fashion Center. Chief Hart stressed the importance of offering the youth alternatives to violence and disorder, urging schools, places of worship, community organizations, and families to guide and support these children in becoming responsible citizens and good neighbors.

Road closures around the Del Amo Fashion Center on the day of the planned takeover are anticipated. The mall has implemented a Youth Supervision Policy, requiring visitors under 18 years old to be accompanied by a parent or an adult over 21 after 3 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Community members with more information about the planned takeovers are urged to contact the Torrance Police Department. Law enforcement aims to provide a safe experience for all visitors and ensure that criminal behavior is not tolerated in the community. The investment in the youth is seen as a means to nurture thriving communities, and authorities are calling on various stakeholders to join together in achieving this goal.
