Barcelona, Spain – Esteemed jurist Juan Antonio Xiol has been appointed as a new counsel for Cuatrecasas’ Cassation and Special Appeals practice group, marking a significant addition to the firm. Xiol brings over five decades of experience in the legal field, particularly noted for his expertise in litigation and civil law, alongside a distinguished career in the judiciary that includes serving in the highest courts of Spain.
Cuatrecasas has notably strengthened its legal team with Xiol’s appointment, reflecting the firm’s commitment to enhancing its role in high-stakes cassation and amparo appeals. Xiol’s vast experience in the Supreme Court and Constitutional Court is expected to provide a substantial advantage in addressing complex legal challenges and fortifying the firm’s leadership in these areas.

Juan Antonio Xiol’s legal career is both lengthy and lauded. Beginning with an impressive academic foundation, he graduated in Law from the University of Barcelona and swiftly entered the judiciary by competitive examination in 1972. His early career advancements were stellar, becoming a contentious magistrate three years later where he was ranked first in his group.
In 1982, he ascended to the role of Secretary General of the Constitutional Court. His judicial appointments include serving as a judge in the Contentious Chamber of the Supreme Court, presiding over various key sections and chambers. He has also held the prestigious position of president of the Civil Chamber of the Supreme Court, appointed by the General Council of the Judiciary, further solidifying his prolific influence in Spanish jurisprudence.
Between 2013 and 2022, Xiol served as a judge of the Constitutional Court, culminating in his appointment as vice-president following a unanimous plenary decision in 2021, a position he held until the end of his term.
Throughout his illustrious career, Xiol has been recognized with several honors that attest to his professional excellence and ethical standards. Notably, he was awarded the Pelayo Award for Jurists of Recognized Prestige in 2009 and has been decorated with the Grand Cross of San Raimundo de Peñafort and of the Order of Isabella the Catholic in 2010.
