Maha Haj’s ‘UPSHOT’ Triumphs at Locarno, Winning Top Auteur Short Film Honors

Locarno, Switzerland – At the 77th Locarno Film Festival, Palestinian filmmaker Maha Haj’s latest short film “UPSHOT” garnered significant accolades, securing both the Pardino d’Oro Swiss Life for Best Auteur Short Film and the Junior Jury Award. The awards underscored the film’s profound impact at its world premiere, where it was featured in the Pardi di Domani – Corti d’Autore Competition.

“UPSHOT,” distinguished for its poignant storytelling and compelling narrative, explores themes of human endurance and imagination amidst the backdrop of ongoing conflict. The film has elicited strong responses from audiences and critics alike for its emotional depth and narrative ingenuity. Samuel Lembo of Sinistra.ch described the film as a visceral experience, a “punch to the gut and a strong blow to the heart,” praising its potent expression of Palestinian resilience.

Film critic Mohamed Reda echoed this enthusiasm in his review for The Middle East Newspaper, heralding “UPSHOT” as one of the standout films of the year. He particularly noted the film’s stellar performances and its measured pacing, which gracefully leads to a poignant narrative twist.

Maha Haj shared insights on her artistic vision, stating that “UPSHOT” serves both as a lamentation and a celebration of the indomitable human spirit. The storyline follows Suleiman and Lubna, a couple grappling with profound loss, who create an alternate reality on an isolated, fog-laden farm to escape their grief. Their peace is challenged when a journalist disrupts their sanctuary, bringing to the fore the harsh truths they’ve sought to evade.

The film’s setting in Gaza adds a layer of urgency and realism, reflecting the enduring strife of the region. The leading roles are portrayed by Mohammed Bakri, Areen Omari, and Amer Hlehel, whose powerful performances contribute significantly to the film’s immersive experience.

“UPSHOT” represents a collaborative effort across Palestine, Italy, and France. It is produced by the Ramallah-based August Films, with contributions from Hanna Atallah and Ronza Kamel. The film builds on the creative momentum of Haj’s career, following her critically acclaimed feature “Mediterranean Fever,” which won the Best Screenplay Prize at Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard sidebar in 2022.

The technical aspects of the film, including cinematography by Augustin Bonnet and editing by Veronique Lange, play a crucial role in crafting its atmospheric depth, with production design by Saher Dwairy further enriching the visual narrative.

“UPSHOT” not only continues Maha Haj’s exploration of complex, heartfelt themes but also solidifies her standing as a significant voice in contemporary cinema. The film’s success at the Locarno Film Festival signals a promising trajectory for its reception in international film circles and among global audiences keen on narratives that delve into the textures of human resilience and creativity amidst adversity.
