Renowned Filmmakers Join Jury for 2024 Sony Future Filmmaker Awards

Los Angeles, CA – The jury for the 2024 Sony Future Filmmaker Awards has been announced by Creo. This year, director Justin Chadwick will serve as the chair for the second consecutive year. Chadwick will be joined on the jury by Michael Barker, Tom Bernard, Rob Hardy ASC, BSC, Kate Reid BSC, Robert Primes ASC, and Unjoo Moon. The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards aim to recognize creative excellence and original storytelling approaches.

Chadwick expressed his excitement about chairing the prestigious panel of talented creatives, acknowledging the significance of short films in the industry. He looks forward to discovering more brilliant individuals through the selection process. The first step in the adjudication involves Primes and Moon choosing 30 films to comprise the shortlist. Barker, Bernard, Hardy, and Reid will then decide on the category winners, with Chadwick overseeing both stages. The shortlist will be revealed on April 23, followed by a four-day workshop for the competitors in late May. The winners will be announced on May 30.

In other news, the Criterion Collection has unveiled its lineup of June releases. The collection features digitally enhanced classic films in 4K ultra-high definition. Leading the pack is Terry Gilliam’s “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” along with films such as “Bound,” “Querelle,” “Victims of Sin,” “The Underground Railroad,” and “Blue Velvet.” Each film will include special editions and behind-the-scenes features approved by the respective filmmaker.

The Location Managers Guild International (LMGI) has also released its award timeline. The LMGI Awards, scheduled for August 24, will celebrate filming locations that set the tone and enhance storytelling narratives. Eligible productions must have been first released between June 2, 2023, and June 1, 2024, with at least 60% of the production shot on location. The nominations will be announced on July 1, and the winners will be revealed at the LMGI Awards ceremony. The awards this year will include categories such as Contemporary Film, Period Film, Contemporary TV, Period TV, TV Serial Program/Anthology/Limited Series, Commercials, and Film Commissions.

The first SignLight International Film Festival, showcasing Deaf filmmakers and creatives from around the world, will take place in Hollywood from April 16-20. Actor-director-producer CJ Jones is organizing the event with support from industry figures such as Marlee Matlin and Rosie O’Donnell. Screenings will include films like “Silent Rhythm” and “Not Another Deaf Story.” The festival aims to promote authentic representation and successful Deaf/hearing creative collaborations.

Finally, the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network and filmmaker Ian Shive have announced an upcoming documentary titled “Wild Rescue: A Second Chance at a Wild Life.” The film will explore the pioneering work in wildlife rehabilitation carried out by the SBWCN. The documentary, set to release in spring 2025, will feature the newly built wildlife hospital and showcase the dedication of veterinarians, volunteers, and community members who rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured wildlife.
