The Exciting Winners of the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival Revealed: Celebrating Extraordinary Talents

Austin, Texas – The winners of the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival have been announced, showcasing exceptional talent and diverse work in the industry. The festival featured a range of categories including Narrative Feature, Documentary Feature, Shorts, Independent TV Pilots, Music Videos, Design, and XR Experience Awards. Special awards were also given out, including the SXSW Best of Texas Award, the Kickstarter NextGen Award, and the Janet Pierson Champion Award presented by Indiewire.

The festival attracted enthusiastic and vocal audiences who celebrated the outstanding films and TV shows presented. Claudette Godfrey, the Vice President of Film & TV at SXSW, expressed excitement over the quality and diversity of the lineup. She highlighted the incredible premieres and the anticipation for the announcement of the winners.

Audience participation is a significant aspect of the SXSW Film & TV Festival, with category-specific Audience Awards to be given out. The winners will be determined through the voting process and will be announced on the SXSW website.

Among the winners in the Narrative Feature Competition category is “Bob Trevino Likes It,” directed and written by Tracie Laymon, with an ensemble of producers. Maria Rodríguez Soto received a Special Jury Award for her outstanding performance in “Mamifera.” Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu was recognized with a Special Jury Award for Filmmaking for her work on “We Were Dangerous.”

In the Documentary Feature Competition, “Grand Theft Hamlet” took home the Jury Award. The film, directed and written by Pinny Grylls and Sam Crane, was produced by Rebecca Wolff and Julia Ton. Carina Mia Wong and Alex Simmons received a Special Jury Award for Bravery and Empathy through their film “We Can Be Heroes.”

The SXSW Film & TV Festival also recognized outstanding short films, including “Dissolution,” directed and written by Anthony Saxe, which won the Narrative Shorts Competition. Sam Cutler-Kreutz and David Cutler-Kreutz were awarded a Special Jury Award for their film “Trapped.”

In the Texas Shorts Competition, “Jedo’s Dead” directed and written by Sara Nimeh, stood out and received the Jury Award. Fatima Wardy’s “Hair Care” also received a Special Jury Award in the same category.

The winner of the Independent TV Pilot Competition was “Marvin Is Sorry.” The show, created by Brett Morrow, Alex Gehrlein, Jack Gacek, and directed by Clint Pang, impressed the jury. Zeke Nicholson was recognized with a Special Jury Award for his work on “Halfrican American.”

The festival also honored achievements in other categories such as Poster Design and XR Experience. John Godfrey’s design for “7 Beats Per Minute” won the Jury Award in the Poster Design Competition, while Andrei Captan received a Special Jury Award for his work on “If I Die in America.” In the XR Experience Competition, “The Golden Key” directed by Marc Da Costa and Matthew Niederhauser won the Jury Award, and “Soul Paint” directed by Sarah Ticho and Niki Smit received a Special Jury Award.

Distinguished special awards were presented as well. “Preconceived” directed by Sabrine Keane and Kate Dumke received the SXSW Best of Texas Award. Kara Durrett, the president of Pinky Promise Films, was honored with the Janet Pierson Champion Award. Lastly, Benjamin Finkel’s “Family” received the Kickstarter NextGen Award.
