Tulane Hosts 30th Biennial Admiralty Law Institute, Focusing on Evolving Issues in Maritime Industry

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – Tulane University is hosting the 30th biennial Admiralty Law Institute (ALI) from March 20-22. This prestigious conference brings together prominent practitioners and scholars in admiralty and maritime law to discuss the industry’s most pressing issues. ALI, established in 1965, is the oldest conference of its kind in the United States and serves as a leading forum for Continuing Legal Education in maritime law. The event attracts over 300 professionals from across the country and from various nations.

Under the theme “Sea Change: U.S. and International Admiralty on the Horizon,” this year’s conference focuses on the evolving aspects of the industry. One of the topics of discussion will be the application of laws in space, drawing parallels to maritime law. Additionally, the conference will address the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Great Lakes Insurance SE v. Raiders Retreat Realty, which upheld federal “choice of law provisions.”

The event is spread over three days, with each day dedicated to a particular theme. Day 1 will explore ship and maritime safety, while Day 2 will delve into “green” issues such as environmental controls, climate change, sustainability, and their impact on space law. Day 3 will focus on professionalism, ethics, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) concerns. Panel discussions will cover a range of topics including carbon emissions, vessel management, port controls, artificial intelligence, cruise ship safety, and international developments in maritime safety.

Maritime Law Center Director Professor Martin Davies expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “This year’s Institute has once again brought together leading practitioners, academics, and industry professionals to discuss the most current issues in maritime law. I am eagerly looking forward to it!”

Those interested in attending the conference can register and find further information on the event’s website. The conference will be held at the Tulane Lavin-Bernick Center, with the program commencing daily at 8 a.m. for registration and check-in. Tulane Law faculty members, including Professor Martin Davies and Professor Robert Force, Director Emeritus of the Tulane Maritime Law Center, will be participating, alongside numerous law alumni and adjunct professors.
