PHILADELPHIA — After a brief tenure at Tucker Law Group, Kenneth Murphy, a prominent former partner at Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath, has rejoined the ranks of a major law firm. Murphy has been appointed as of counsel at DLA Piper’s Philadelphia office where he began his legal career.
Murphy spent a significant part of his career at Faegre Drinker and its predecessor, Drinker Biddle & Reath, where he dedicated 15 years as a partner. His specialized work in products liability cases, particularly representing corporate giant Johnson & Johnson, has distinguished him in the legal community.
In 2022, Murphy left Big Law to serve as counsel at Tucker Law Group. This move saw him leave an extensive portfolio of business at Faegre Drinker to focus on institutional clientele and to foster new relationships at the smaller firm. Reflecting on his time there, Murphy mentioned, “There wasn’t much change in the nature of the work, but the scope was different. My brief period at Tucker Law offered me a refreshing perspective, and soon I found myself fielding increased requests to handle cases similar to those I managed previously.”
His return to DLA Piper is spurred by reflection and self-honesty. Murphy emphasized, “It was crucial to be true to myself about my preferences and desires in my professional life. I realized this is what I genuinely enjoy doing and felt naturally suited for it.”
While his stint at Tucker Law Group was short-lived, it allowed Murphy to hone his mentorship skills. He took pride in guiding younger lawyers and helping to lay down robust procedures and systems critical for nurturing a new generation of leadership within the firm. Although DLA Piper has its structured programs for succession, Murphy intends to continue his role as a mentor.
“One of my strengths, I believe, is mentoring and teaching young attorneys,” Murphy said. “I look forward to helping them navigate through trials, acquire business, and manage client relationships, which are all vital for thriving in this profession.”
The transition back to DLA Piper also represents a personal full circle for Murphy. He began his career in 1989 at One Liberty Place, which is now home to his current office at DLA Piper. He anticipates a busy schedule ahead, with an increase in trials and continued new client engagements.
“This role marks a return to the familiar aspects of my previous legal practice,” Murphy shared. “With the volume of work expected to rise in the coming years, there is plenty to engage with.”
Joe Tucker, the founder of Tucker Law Group, expressed his sentiments on Murphy’s departure. “Ken is not only a close friend but also a stellar attorney and person. While we enjoyed our time working together, the platform at DLA Piper aligns perfectly with his expertise and needs. They are fortunate to have him, and though his daily presence will be sorely missed, I wish him all the best in his next professional chapter.”
Murphy’s return to DLA Piper not only brings him back to a familiar environment but also positions him as a pivotal figure in continuing to mentor the upcoming legal talents within one of the country’s leading law firms.
