Cannes Critics’ Week Announces Diverse and Esteemed Jury for 63rd Edition

Cannes, France – The jury members for the upcoming 63rd edition of Cannes Critics’ Week have been announced. Joining previously announced jury president Rodrigo Sorogoyen are Rwandan actress Eliane Umuhire, French producer Sylvie Pialat, Belgian cinematographer Virginie Surdej, and Canadian film critic and journalist Ben Croll.

Cannes Critics’ Week, overseen by the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics, focuses on first and second features as well as shorts by emerging talents. Sorogoyen and his jury will be responsible for deciding the winners of several awards, including the Semaine de la Critique Grand Prize for best feature film, the French Touch Prize of the Jury, the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star Award for best actor and actress, and the Leitz Ciné Discovery for best short film.

The official selection, which consists of 11 features, seven in competition, and a mix of competitive and non-competitive shorts, will be announced on April 15.

This year’s jury members bring diverse backgrounds and expertise to the table. Eliane Umuhire is an acclaimed Rwandan actress known for her roles in films such as “Augure by Baloji,” “My New Friends,” and “Haven of Grace.” Sylvie Pialat, a seasoned French producer, has worked on notable films like “Timbuktu,” “Staying Vertical,” and “The Whistlers.” Belgian cinematographer Virginie Surdej has lent her creative eye to projects like “The Blue Caftan,” “Our Mothers,” and “Casablanca Beats.” Lastly, Canadian film critic and journalist Ben Croll will provide valuable insights and analysis during the jury deliberations.

With such a diverse and talented jury, the 63rd edition of Cannes Critics’ Week promises to showcase the best of emerging talent and highlight the creativity and innovation in the film industry. As the official selection is unveiled later this month, film enthusiasts and industry insiders eagerly await the announcement of the films that will compete for the prestigious awards.
