Nigerian Lawyer Assaulted During Court Order Execution; Bar Association Blames Speaker’s Aides

Osogbo, Nigeria — Tensions flared in Osogbo, Osun State, following an alleged attack on a local lawyer by individuals reported to be linked to the state legislature. The Nigerian Bar Association’s Osogbo branch reacted sharply to the incident involving lawyer Muhydeen Yusuf, who reportedly suffered an assault during a legal property evacuation, allegedly in the presence of Adewale Egbedun, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly.

Yemi Abiona, the chairman of the Osogbo NBA, accused Speaker Egbedun of instigating the confrontation by verbally harassing the lawyer before the alleged physical attack by his aides. The incident took place last Friday while Yusuf was executing a court order with the aid of police officers and bailiffs at a technical site in Osogko.

In contrast, Olamide Tiamiyu, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, refuted these allegations stating that neither Egbedun nor his aides participated in any assault. He suggested that the uproar was instead caused by local onlookers upset by the court-ordered execution.

Moreover, Tiamiyu offered an alternative account where a plainclothes officer from the Speaker’s team acted heroically to shield Yusuf from harm by escorting him to a vehicle, implying that the intervention was aimed at ensuring his safety, not causing him distress.

Yusuf himself narrated the sequence of events differently. According to him, the operation initially went smoothly with individuals on the site cooperating with the eviction process. The arrival of the Speaker with his convoy marked a turning point. Yusuf alleges that after he objected to Egbedun’s directive to the police and bailiffs to halt the evacuation, the Speaker criticized him publicly and shortly thereafter, his aides physically attacked him.

This account highlights an escalating conflict at the scene, which culminated with Yusub allegedly being beaten under Egbedun’s direction, an act that also supposedly included aggression towards a court bailiff.

This incident raises compelling questions about the treatment of legal professionals and the respect for law in Osogbo, an issue that has garnered the attention of media and the public across Nigeria. It underscores a potent tension between legal authority and political power, especially in cases where property and land use are concerned.

Legal experts from within the Nigerian Bar Association and beyond have expressed grave concerns over the event, viewing it as a stark violation of legal propriety and a breach of individual rights under the law.

As perspectives diverge, communities await further clarification and response from both governmental and legal authorities. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association is calling for a thorough investigation into the events to ascertain accountability and ensure such confrontations are avoided in the future, advocating for the utmost respect for the rule of law and the safe conduct of legal procedures.
