Man Convicted of Second-Degree Murder in Fatal Shooting of Wife’s Boyfriend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A jury in Kern County has convicted a man of murder in the shooting death of his wife’s boyfriend in 2021. The jury found Dashaun Hunter guilty of second-degree murder, which could result in a prison term of 15 years to life. However, due to enhancements filed in the case, Hunter faces a significantly longer sentence.

According to prosecutor Samantha Allen, Hunter, 36, shot and killed Reginald McCoy Jr. on February 20, 2021, after discovering his wife’s relationship with McCoy. Hunter was on a FaceTime call with his wife when he fired seven rounds at McCoy. DNA evidence found on shell casings recovered at the scene and cellphone records placing Hunter in the area during the shooting contributed to his conviction.

During the trial, Hunter’s defense attorney, Tony Lidgett, suggested that the wife may have been the killer. Lidgett pointed out that on the day of the shooting, the wife sought help from a neighbor while McCoy chased her, displaying a black eye. He argued that she may have acted out of anger, fear, or self-defense and shot McCoy later. However, the jury ultimately rejected this argument.

Sentencing for Hunter is scheduled for next month. The conviction of second-degree murder means he could face a prison term longer than 15 years to life due to enhancements filed in the case.

This tragic incident highlights the consequences of a deeply distressed relationship. The court proceedings exposed the extent of Hunter’s dissatisfaction upon learning about his wife’s involvement with McCoy. The shooting took place at McCoy’s residence, marking a desperate attempt by Hunter to confront the person he believed threatened his marriage.

The jury’s decision demonstrates their belief in the prosecutor’s case, which primarily relied on DNA evidence and cellphone records to establish Hunter’s presence at the crime scene during the shooting. Despite the defense’s attempt to shift blame onto the wife, the evidence was compelling enough for the jury to discredit this theory.

The upcoming sentencing will determine the future of the convicted murderer. The judge will take into consideration the severity of the crime, any previous criminal record, and other relevant factors before deciding the appropriate punishment. As the sentence is given, the court’s decision will provide closure to the family and friends affected by this tragic event.
