Acclaimed Film ‘Dìdi’ to Hit Theaters This Summer: A Coming-of-Age Story Filled with Skateboarding, Flirting, and Unconditional Love

Los Angeles, CA – Focus Features is set to release its acquisition from the Sundance Film Festival, “Dìdi,” on July 26. The film, directed by Oscar nominee Sean Wang, premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and garnered critical acclaim, winning multiple awards.

“Dìdi” tells the story of a 13-year-old Taiwanese-American boy in the last month of summer in 2008, just before he starts high school. Through the eyes of this young protagonist, the film explores themes of skateboarding, first love, and the complex relationship with his mother. Wang, who also wrote the screenplay, draws inspiration from his own youth in crafting this coming-of-age story.

The film features an impressive ensemble cast, including Izaac Wang, Joan Chen, Shirley Chen, and Chang Li Hua. Behind the scenes, producers Carlos López Estrada, Josh Peters, Valerie Bush, and Sean Wang have brought “Dìdi” to life.

This is not Wang’s first venture into filmmaking. His previous work, “Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó” (Grandma & Grandma), premiered at SXSW 2023 and received critical acclaim, winning the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award. Currently, it is nominated for Best Documentary Short Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

Audiences can also catch Focus Features’ current film, “Lisa Frankenstein,” directed by Zelda Williams, in theaters. As of February 13, it has grossed $4.4M.
