ST. LOUIS (AP) – The suspect in the death of Jacque Mitchell has been found guilty on multiple charges by a jury. The trial, which began earlier this week, concluded yesterday when the judge sent the case to the jury for deliberation. Within just five hours, the jury reached a verdict, finding Joseph Dejoie guilty of involuntary manslaughter, but acquitted of second-degree murder. He was also found guilty on charges of tampering with evidence, abandonment of a corpse, possession of a controlled substance, kidnapping, sodomy, and rape.
The jury further recommended the maximum sentence for most of the convictions, including three life sentences for the sex crimes. The sentencing hearing, where the judge will formally sentence Dejoie, is scheduled for May 17th.
Jacque Mitchell’s body was discovered by investigators in Dejoie’s apartment in Maryland Heights in March of last year. Mitchell’s family had reported her missing after not hearing from her since March 14th, 2023. Surveillance footage from that night showed her leaving Maggie O’Brien’s in Sunset Hills. It is alleged that Mitchell met up with Dejoie after leaving the restaurant, and her body remained in his bedroom for six days before being found.
