Erath County Man Indicted for Targeting Registered Sex Offenders in Shooting Incident

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – An indictment was handed down by an Erath County grand jury on Friday against a man accused of targeting and shooting a registered sex offender. Charles Austin Broyles, 30, now faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to Captain Jeremy Lanier of the Stephenville Police Department.

The incident took place on the night of December 3, 2023. Broyles allegedly went to a residence on Morgan Mill Road in Erath County and shot the registered sex offender in the face. As revealed in the arrest affidavit, Broyles had specifically targeted registered sex offenders living in the area, obtaining their names and addresses from the public sex offender website.

Thankfully, the victim survived the attack and is currently undergoing recovery. Law enforcement authorities took swift action, apprehending Broyles the day after the shooting. Investigators discovered that Broyles had also visited the homes of two other registered sex offenders, but left when they did not answer the door.

If convicted, Broyles could face a prison sentence ranging from two to 20 years. This case sheds light on the ongoing debate surrounding vigilantism and the complex issues surrounding the management of sex offenders in communities. It raises questions about the sufficiency of public sex offender registries and the potential risks associated with them.

Broyles’ alleged actions serve as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their criminal history. The incident also highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges posed by sex offenders in society. Such an approach should focus on prevention, rehabilitation, and community education.

The Erath County grand jury indictment sends a strong message that acts of violence and vigilantism will not be tolerated. It is now up to the justice system to carefully consider the evidence and determine the appropriate course of action. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for both the victim and the broader community.

As the legal proceedings progress, it remains crucial for communities to engage in open and constructive dialogue about effective strategies for dealing with sex offenders and promoting public safety. By working together, we can strive to create a society that protects its most vulnerable members while ensuring justice for all.
