Honolulu, Hawaii – A grand jury on Oahu has charged 33-year-old Kealoha Tapu with second-degree attempted murder and first-degree terroristic threatening after a series of unsettling incidents occurred mid-June. Tapu is accused of a violent stabbing near a popular shopping area and issuing death threats towards a security guard.
On June 15, in the bustling Ward-Ala Moana corridor, a security guard attempting to remove Tapu from private property on Ala Moana Boulevard encountered a life-threatening situation. Officials stated that upon being asked to vacate the premises, Tapu brandished a knife and explicitly threatened the guard’s life. The guard managed to escape unharmed and notified authorities, prompting an immediate search for Tapu.
Approximately 90 minutes after the confrontation with the guard, Tapu was allegedly involved in another violent encounter, this time at a bus stop on Keeaumoku Street directly outside the state’s busiest Walmart. It is there that Tapu reportedly engaged in a physical altercation with a Walmart employee, culminating in Tapu stabbing the man in the chest.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was swiftly transported to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition. This incident sparked significant concern among local residents and businesses due to its proximity to such a heavily trafficked public area.
If convicted of the charges, Tapu faces severe legal consequences. The attempted murder charge alone carries a mandatory life sentence with the potential for parole, signaling the gravity of the accusations.
