Rachel Griffiths to Chair Jury at CinefestOZ, Offering $100K Film Prize Amid Stellar Lineup and Intimate Filmmaker Events

Busselton, Australia — The CinefestOZ Film Festival, celebrated for its premiere of Australian cinematic works, has announced Rachel Griffiths, a distinguished actress and filmmaker, as the Jury Chair of its prestigious film prize. Scheduled from August 31 to September 8 in the scenic South West region of Western Australia, the festival boasts the country’s most lucrative film award, offering $100,000 to an outstanding Australian production.

Griffiths expressed her excitement about the role, emphasizing the festival’s cultural significance post-pandemic. “After the challenges brought by Covid, events such as CinefestOZ play a crucial role in reviving our shared heritage of storytelling and in reinforcing community ties,” she remarked.

This year’s jury panel includes notables from the global film community. Among them are Gary Foster, an accomplished American producer known for major titles like “Sleepless in Seattle”; Nel Minchin, a respected documentary writer, director, and producer; and Tasma Walton, an award-winning Australian actress.

These jury members are set to assess four shortlisted films: “Runt”, “The Moogai”, “Audrey”, and “Memoir of a Snail”. Their evaluations will culminate at the Film Prize Celebration, where the winner will be declared, following their engagements at various festival premieres and a special breakfast event hosted at the Shelter Brewing Co., where they will discuss the film finalists.

Margaret Buswell, chair of the CinefestOZ, highlighted the anticipation surrounding the jury’s deliberations. “With such a diverse array of films vying for the prize, our esteemed jury faces a challenging yet exciting decision,” she noted.

Since its inception a decade ago, the CinefestOZ Film Prize has become a cornerstone event to celebrate and encourage Australian filmmaking excellence. The prize has gained recognition not only for its financial value but also for the platform it provides to filmmakers.

Past recipients of the Film Prize include notable productions that have made significant impacts both in Australia and internationally. Previous winners include “Shayda” in 2023, “Of An Age” in 2022, and “Nitram” in 2021, among others. These films represent a range of genres and stories, showcasing the breadth of talent within the Australian film industry.

As CinefestOZ approaches, it continues to draw attention with its blend of local charm and international film industry flair. The festival not only serves as a significant cultural event for its region but also as a vital gathering for filmmakers and enthusiasts across the globe, waving the flag high for Australian cinema on the world stage.
