VENICE, Italy — The prestigious Venice International Film Festival, scheduled for August 28 to September 7, has finalized its International Jury for the eagerly awaited Venezia 81 competition. The panel comprises a diverse group of nine cinema luminaries from around the globe, tasked with selecting the best film for the coveted Golden Lion award among various other accolades.
Leading the jury this year as president is renowned French actress Isabelle Huppert, whose illustrious career includes accolades such as two Best Actress awards at Venice Film Festival and a Special Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. Joining her are accomplished directors and actors from different continents, each bringing a wealth of experience and unique perspectives to the judging table.
The jury features American director James Gray, known for his frequent collaborations with Joaquin Phoenix and films that regularly compete at major international festivals. British director Andrew Haigh, who brings a nuanced storytelling approach that has earned him critical acclaim across major award circuits, is also a key member.
From Poland, Agnieszka Holland, a director with a robust portfolio of award-winning films, contributes her vast experience. Her films have secured her Oscar nominations and significant international recognition, including a Silver Bear at the Berlinale and accolades from the Academy Awards.
Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho, a noted film programmer turned director, and Abderrahmane Sissako from Mauritania, an influential voice in African cinema, bring their unique cinematic narratives to the panel. Italian cinema is represented by Giuseppe Tornatore, whose film “Cinema Paradiso” won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. His body of work, celebrated worldwide, reflects a deep passion for storytelling that resonates with a global audience.
German director Julia von Heinz, who has made waves with her politically charged cinema and teaching at the University of Television and Film in Munich, adds an academic perspective to the jury. Rising talents include Zhang Ziyi of China, who has transitioned from award-winning actress in groundbreaking films like “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” to a director, showcasing the evolving landscape of Chinese cinema.
