ORANGE COUNTY, California – Edwin Schwartz, a trial attorney based in Orange County, California, recently shared his journey of making a career change from sales to law. Schwartz graduated from the University of Southern California with a bachelor’s in business administration in 1992 and spent most of his twenties and thirties working in sales, including stints with software companies and car dealerships. However, he realized that sales was not his dream job and that it required long hours and unpredictable income.
The decision to change careers came when Schwartz became a father to twin daughters. He felt a desire to be more present in their lives and recognized that a career in law could offer the financial stability he desired. Schwartz, who initially held preconceived notions about the legal profession, was inspired by the success of the lawyers in his family. He decided to pursue a career in law and started by enrolling in the Law School Admissions Test and looking for colleges with evening programs.
At the age of 39, Schwartz began law school at California Western School of Law. Despite the challenges of balancing law school, a full-time job, and family responsibilities, Schwartz persevered. He embraced the advantages his life experience provided, such as knowledge of financial transactions and a calmer attitude in the face of setbacks. To finance his education, Schwartz took out loans and graduated with a significant amount of student debt.
After passing the California State Bar exam at the age of 43, Schwartz embarked on his career as an attorney. Utilizing his background in sales, he started his own practice before ultimately joining a law firm where he currently works. The transition to law not only doubled Schwartz’s income but also provided him with a greater sense of job security and longevity. As a trial attorney, he acknowledges the occasional long days at work but finds them manageable and fulfilling compared to his previous careers.
Schwartz’s story serves as an inspiration for those considering a career change later in life. Despite initial doubts and sacrifices, he found fulfillment and success in the legal profession. The experience of transitioning careers after 35 highlights the importance of following one’s passion and seeking opportunities for personal and professional growth. Schwartz encourages others to pursue their dreams and shares his story as a testament to the rewards that can come from taking that leap of faith.
