CASS COUNTY, N.D. – A new scam tactic has emerged in the F-M area, prompting the Cass County Sheriff’s Office to issue a warning to the public. Scammers are making calls from a specific number, (701) 253-0994, falsely claiming that the recipient has a warrant for Failure to Appear for jury duty. In order to resolve the supposed issue, the scammer instructs the victim to bring $3,000 to various local businesses to facilitate a fund transfer.
To make their fraudulent claims more convincing, the scammers even went as far as sending a text message with a fabricated warrant, personalized with the victim’s name. A photo of the fake warrant was obtained by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Law enforcement authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and remain vigilant if they receive a phone call or text message from someone claiming to be a “deputy” within the Sheriff’s Office.
In case of doubts or suspicions about the authenticity of such calls, individuals are advised to promptly end the conversation and contact the Red River Regional Dispatch Center at (701) 451-7660. By requesting to speak with a deputy, the caller can be reassured of the legitimacy of the original call. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes their preference for residents to utilize this verification process rather than becoming victims of scams.
These latest attempts to defraud residents serve as a reminder of the importance of staying informed and cautious when dealing with potentially suspicious communications. Scammers continuously adapt their tactics to exploit unsuspecting individuals, making it crucial for the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. By promptly reporting such incidents, the community contributes to the collective effort to mitigate fraudulent activities.
Residents are encouraged to share information about this scam with friends, family, and neighbors to raise awareness and prevent further victims from falling prey to this scheme. Additionally, it is advisable to stay updated on the latest scams and frauds prevalent in the area by regularly checking official law enforcement sources or reaching out to the local authorities.
