Covington Man Files Lawsuit against City and Police Officers, Alleging Violation of Civil Rights through Excessive Force

COVINGTON, Ky. – A man has filed a lawsuit against the City of Covington and several police officers alleging that his civil rights were violated due to excessive force. Anthony Wynn’s attorney has brought forth the lawsuit, targeting both the city and all police officers and staff involved in the alleged violation.

According to the lawsuit, the incident took place in January 2021 when Wynn was sitting in the back seat of a car driven by a friend who was pulled over for failing to use a turn signal. The lawsuit claims that Officer John Murphy, during the traffic stop, demanded Wynn to present his identification. However, Wynn chose not to comply, exercising his legal right to do so.

The situation escalated when the officer reportedly threatened to issue a citation and then demanded that Wynn exit the vehicle. As per the lawsuit, this interaction resulted in Wynn being forcefully slammed to the ground, punched, and placed in a chokehold. Some of these alleged actions were captured on camera. According to Wynn’s attorney, the incident led to Wynn dislocating his shoulder.

In addition, Wynn’s attorney emphasizes that the police officers involved have a history of alleged misconduct, yet no disciplinary actions have been taken thus far. Despite the lawsuit, the Covington Police Department declined to comment on ongoing civil litigation.

By filing this lawsuit, Wynn seeks justice for the violation of his civil rights, alleging excessive force used by the City of Covington’s police officers. The lawsuit sheds light on an encounter that raises concerns regarding police conduct and accountability.

It is essential to ensure that incidents involving potential misconduct are thoroughly investigated and addressed, holding accountable those officers found responsible. This case raises broader questions about the relationship between law enforcement and the community, highlighting the need for transparency and oversight.

As the lawsuit unfolds, it will be crucial to observe how the City of Covington and the police department respond to these allegations of police misconduct and excessive force. The outcome of this case may have significant implications for discussions surrounding police reform and accountability in Covington and the broader national context.
