PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago – A lawyer in Trinidad and Tobago has claimed that he is still living in fear nearly two years after reporting an alleged plot to kill him. The targeted attorney says that despite providing evidence, including signed statements from a prisoner who had been approached to carry out the hit, the police have failed to take any action. The lawyer alleges that another attorney had planned to hire the prisoner, who was serving a life sentence at the time. The targeted attorney, who has filed an official police report, expressed his frustration with the lack of updates from the police.
According to the targeted attorney, he became aware of the alleged plot in April 2022 while speaking to a client who was incarcerated at the Maximum Security Prison. After learning the details of the plot, the attorney reached out to the inmate who was allegedly hired to carry out the hit. He was able to authenticate the inmate’s statement due to his prior representation of the inmate in court. The attorney then reported the incident to an officer from the Anti-Corruption Investigations Bureau.
The attorney met with senior police officers in May 2022 and provided them with the prisoner’s statement and further information about the alleged plot. He was assured that the report would be taken seriously and forwarded for investigation. However, since that meeting, the attorney claims to have heard nothing further about the case. He has written letters to high-ranking officials, including the Minister of National Security, in an attempt to bring attention to the matter.
The targeted attorney emphasized in his letters that the prisoner had expressed a willingness to assist in the investigation and provide a sworn statement if approached by the police. The prisoner, who has since been freed, has come forward to share his side of the story. He claims that Special Branch officers visited him regularly and recorded a video conversation with him regarding the alleged plot. The prisoner alleges that the plot was first hatched in 2011 by the well-known attorney, who had approached him with requests for random shootings.
The ex-convict expressed fear for his life since providing the information, stating that he has been staying at various relatives’ homes and constantly moving to ensure his safety. He hopes that the police will act on the information he has provided and bring an end to the situation.
The targeted attorney continues to live in fear, with no updates or action from the police. He believes that the well-known attorney, who he alleges plotted to kill him, has connections to high-ranking individuals and fears the serious threat made against him. Both the attorney and the ex-convict hope that their claims will be taken seriously and that justice will be served.
