MARLBOROUGH, MA – A Marlborough man has been convicted and could face up to five years in state prison after carrying out a brutal machete attack that resulted from a dispute over a soccer game. Abel Hernandez, 41, was found guilty of one count of making threats to commit a crime and one count of causing severe injury after a four-day jury trial, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.
Authorities reported that the incident occurred on July 9 inside a residence on Broad Street. Hernandez allegedly wielded a machete and swung it at the victim, striking the victim’s forearm while uttering a death threat. As a result, the victim sustained a severe injury, with his arm nearly severed.
Marlborough police promptly arrested Hernandez near the intersection of Church and Hildreth streets. Throughout the trial, Hernandez maintained his innocence, claiming to have been drinking at a restaurant during the time of the attack. However, investigations revealed that the restaurant in question was closed on the day of the incident and did not serve alcohol.
In response to the charges, Middlesex Superior Court Judge Catherine Ham sentenced Hernandez to a maximum of five years in state prison for the severe injury charge, in addition to three years of probation.
