Tallahassee, Fla. – Donna Adelson, the mother of Charlie Adelson who was recently found guilty of murder-for-hire in the case of FSU law professor Dan Markel’s murder, has secured a new defense team. According to documents filed by the Leon County Clerk, Adelson will now be represented by Daniel Rashbaum, who previously defended her son in trial, as well as Tallahassee-based attorney Alex Morris.
The hiring of this new defense team comes as Adelson faces charges of murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in connection with Markel’s 2014 murder. Her son Charlie was convicted for his role in the crime and sentenced to life in prison in November. Charlie Adelson was found guilty of hiring hitmen to kill Markel, who was involved in a contentious custody battle with Charlie’s sister, Wendi.
Donna Adelson’s arrest took place shortly after her son’s conviction, as she was attempting to board a one-way flight to Vietnam. Previously, Adelson was represented by defense attorney Marissel Descalzo from Miami. Neither Rashbaum nor Morris have commented on their representation of Donna Adelson.
A case management hearing that was originally scheduled for today had to be canceled due to inclement weather. The hearing has been rescheduled for January 30. Donna Adelson is the latest individual to face charges in connection with Markel’s murder, as four others, including her son Charlie, have already been convicted and sentenced.
