The Georgia Poor People’s Campaign has taken the lead in this initiative, rallying together lower-wage workers, faith leaders, and activists who are calling on lawmakers to prioritize policies aimed at improving the lives of those with low incomes. This campaign, known as “40 Weeks of Action,” seeks to mobilize voters ahead of the upcoming November election.
The Georgia Poor People’s Campaign highlights the significant role low-income earners play in the state’s electorate, representing 27% of voters with an annual household income below $50,000. Notably, the movement in Georgia is not isolated, as numerous chapters across different states have also joined the cause, outlining their efforts to increase voter turnout.
Co-chair Reverend Dr. William J. Barber II of the Poor People’s Campaign stressed the importance of addressing the concerns of low-wage voters, who have often been overlooked in the political arena. Contrary to popular belief, he insists that poor and low-wage voters are not apathetic towards politics nor marginal to election outcomes. Driven by their shared goal to end the crisis of poverty in America, these voters possess the power to influence electoral results. Thus, politicians are forewarned that if they desire support from this voting bloc, they must legislate solutions to combat poverty.
This voter mobilization push occurs alongside the intense campaigning efforts of presidential candidates from both major parties as the primary election day in Georgia rapidly approaches. Recently, First Lady Jill Biden visited Atlanta, launching the ‘Women For Biden’ initiative, while former President Donald Trump made a stop in North Carolina on Saturday to further his campaign.
