RENO, Nev. – A recent study conducted by Giffords Law Center has revealed that Nevada’s gun safety laws have earned a B- grade. This evaluation follows a tragic mass shooting at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, where three professors lost their lives. According to Allison Anderman, a senior attorney at Giffords Law, their annual report demonstrates a clear correlation between stronger gun laws and lower rates of gun-related fatalities. Anderman emphasizes the importance of examining effective measures when aiming to save lives.
The report, known as the gun law scorecard, assesses and ranks all 50 states based on the strength of their gun legislation. This scoring system provides legislators and voters with valuable insights into areas requiring improvement. Anderman highlights that policies such as background checks, funding for community violence intervention programs, and waiting periods receive higher points. Conversely, states lose points for allowing permitless carry and implementing “Stand Your Ground” laws.
In the past six years, Nevada has made significant strides in strengthening its gun safety laws, elevating its score from a D to a B-. Notably, the state enacted an extreme risk protection order law, trigger activator ban, and child access prevention law. Assemblywoman Sandra Jauregui, herself a survivor of the Las Vegas Route 91 shooting, spearheaded these legislative efforts. Anderman commends Nevada for its commitment to laws that restrict children’s access to unsecured firearms, remove guns from prohibited individuals, and regulate ghost guns.
Despite these advancements, Anderman believes there is still room for improvement, as Nevada falls short of an A rating in gun legislation. Notably, the state lacks requirements for gun owners to obtain licenses, has weak measures to prevent those with a history of domestic violence from accessing firearms, and does not regulate assault weapons or high-capacity magazines.
The evaluation of Nevada’s gun safety laws serves as a reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive measures to prevent gun-related violence. Giffords Law Center’s scorecard provides a roadmap for legislators and voters to consider when shaping future policies. The goal remains clear: to enact effective legislation that prioritizes public safety while respecting the rights of responsible gun owners. The pursuit of stronger gun laws continues to be a crucial component in minimizing gun-related tragedies.
