Air Force Member Sues Charlotte Marriott for $160 Million After Alleged Sexual Assault and Theft in Hotel Room

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A man from Mississippi has filed a $160 million lawsuit against a hotel in Uptown Charlotte, alleging that he was sexually assaulted by another individual during his stay. The incident reportedly took place at the Charlotte Marriott City Center, located at the intersection of Trade and Tryon streets.

The plaintiff, who has been referred to as “John Doe” in legal documents, claims to be a member of the Air Force and was visiting Charlotte in April 2022 while en route to Orlando for training. Due to flight cancellations, he used loyalty points to book a room at the Marriott.

According to the lawsuit, John Doe fell asleep in his room without realizing that the self-closing and self-locking door was faulty. As a result, the door did not properly latch shut or lock. It was during his slumber that he woke up to find himself being sexually assaulted by an assailant without his consent. In an act of self-defense, John Doe fought back and managed to repel the suspect, identified as Jermaine Peay. However, before fleeing, Peay allegedly stole John Doe’s wallet, pants, and shirt.

Peay was subsequently arrested in January 2023 and charged with first-degree burglary, forced sexual offense, and larceny after breaking and entering. As of now, he is still awaiting trial. John Doe’s lawsuit claims that the hotel should have been aware of the faulty locks and neglected to provide adequate security. However, the hotel chain, Marriott, has yet to respond to requests for a statement regarding the lawsuit.

This incident has once again raised concerns about the safety and security provided by hotels, highlighting the need for well-functioning doors and robust security measures. While the lawsuit seeks significant compensation, it may also prompt Marriott and other hotel chains to reevaluate their security protocols to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

It is important to note that cases of sexual assault are serious crimes and can have long-lasting emotional and psychological effects on the victims. The legal process, unfortunately, can be arduous and time-consuming for those seeking justice.

In a similar incident reported in the area, a man was charged after a woman was restrained and robbed in a Charlotte hotel room. These incidents serve as a stark reminder that hotel guests should remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or concerns to hotel staff or local authorities.

The outcome of John Doe’s lawsuit against the Charlotte Marriott City Center will likely be closely watched, as it may have implications for the broader hospitality industry and its responsibility for guest safety. The results of this case, combined with ongoing efforts to strengthen security measures, have the potential to shape the future of hotel accommodations and guest experiences.
