LISBON, Ohio — Kelly Linger, a seasoned attorney with extensive experience in both prosecution and defense, has been appointed as the new judge of the Columbiana County Municipal Court. Set to start on July 23, Linger steps into a role vacated by former Judge Katelyn Dickey earlier this year.
Governor Mike DeWine announced Linger’s appointment late last week, marking a significant move in the local judiciary. Dickey had left her position following a new appointment to the Seventh District Court of Appeals at the end of March. Linger, an assistant prosecutor and one of three candidates recommended by the Columbiana County Republican Party, emerged as the chosen appointee after rigorous screenings and interviews held in Columbus.
Linger expressed her excitement and gratitude about the appointment. “I’m honored and thrilled that Governor DeWine chose me and feels I’m qualified for such an important position,” she stated, affirming her commitment to serving the community with fairness and dedication.
Linger, a native of East Liverpool and a graduate of Beaver Local High School, brings a unique perspective to the bench, having defended and prosecuted cases in her career. Her legal journey began in 2006 at Mark J. Obral and Associates, with subsequent roles, including a stint as president of the non-profit Columbiana County Defense League and acting judge in East Liverpool Municipal Court before its integration into the county system in 2022.
She has also held a position as an assistant prosecutor in Columbiana County since 2021, a role she will resign from as she transitions to her judgeship. In her new position, Linger is excited to collaborate with Judge Tim McNicol, who also presides over the Municipal Court. She believes her diverse experiences will aid her greatly on the bench.
In addition to her legal practice, Linger is an active community member, serving on the board of directors for Columbiana County Memorial Park and participating in the local bar association. Her educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Kent State University and a juris doctor from Cleveland Marshall College of Law.
Linger will serve out the remainder of Dickey’s term, which concludes at the end of 2025. To maintain her seat on the bench, she will need to run for election in November 2025.
As Linger prepares to assume her judicial duties, the community watches with hopeful anticipation. Her diverse legal background and commitment to public service suggest a promising tenure ahead in the Columbiana County justice system.
