DETROIT (AP) — A former narcotics cop who faced controversy and civil lawsuits during his time with the Detroit Police Department is now facing new allegations of wrongdoing. Matthew Zani, along with five other private security officers, is being sued in federal court by two Black visitors to Detroit’s Renaissance Center. The visitors claim that Zani and other officers assaulted them and detained them in a basement cell. The lawsuit also alleges racial profiling and harassment of Black guests at the RenCen since 2016. Zani’s previous misconduct while working as a Detroit police officer has raised questions about his hiring by a private security police force patrolling the RenCen. The security firm, under state oversight, is accused of a pattern of racism and harassment by its white officers, including Zani, according to a recent investigation. GM, which owns the RenCen, has taken action in response to the allegations, removing officers under investigation from the property and suspending their arrest powers. The security firm has since given up its state license. Two separate investigations are ongoing into the actions of the RenCen police force, including a review by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards. Zani’s history of civil rights violations, including excessive force, false arrests, and racial discrimination, raises concerns about his continued involvement in law enforcement. The outcome of the federal lawsuit and the ongoing investigations will shed further light on these allegations.
